The Mental Load of Feeding Kids (And How to Make It Easier)
For many parents, dinnertime isn’t really about cooking.
It’s the mental load that gets you.
Will they eat this? Is this still a safe food? Should I just make something separate?
That constant back-and-forth is what makes feeding kids feel so draining, even on the nights when dinner itself is easy.
Why mealtimes feel harder than they should
The problem usually isn’t the food. It’s the uncertainty around it.
Most parents aren’t just cooking, they’re second-guessing every meal, adjusting on the fly to preferences that seem to change weekly, and carrying the full weight of food decisions without anyone to share it with. That’s a lot to hold.
What actually helps
One of the simplest things you can do is bring your child into the process earlier.
Most parents notice it straight away: when a child has had a hand in making something, they’re far more likely to eat it. There’s research to back this up, but honestly, you probably don’t need a study. You’ve seen it happen.
When kids wash the vegetables, stir something in a bowl, pick between two options, or help put food on their own plate, something shifts. They stop being passengers at the table and start feeling like they belong there. That sense of ownership changes the dynamic more than any clever dinner strategy.
You don’t have to overhaul anything
Start with one thing. Let them choose between two options at the next meal. Give them a simple job they can do every night. Involve them in just one step of the process and see what happens.
Small changes like this tend to stick because they’re not disruptive. They just quietly become part of how your family does dinner.
The tools matter more than you’d think
Kids can only really participate if the tools let them. When everything on the table is adult-sized, it’s hard for small hands to feel capable, and the point is to build confidence, not frustration.
Child-sized knives, plates, and cutlery designed for little hands make a real difference. Not as props, but as actual tools that help kids hold, control, and contribute at the table.
