How to Offer Choices That Empower (Not Overwhelm) Your Child
As a mum, I used to think giving kids lots of options made me a more respectful, empowering parent. “What would you like for lunch?” “What do you want to wear today?” “What do you want to do now?”
But what I learned through Montessori (and many humbling moments!) is that too much choice can actually lead to stress, tantrums, and decision fatigue for little ones. Especially toddlers.
So, let’s talk about how to offer choices that empower your child without overwhelming them.
Why Choice Matters in Montessori
One of the most beautiful things about Montessori is the emphasis on child-led independence. But independence doesn’t mean handing over the reins entirely. It means guiding your child to make developmentally appropriate decisions.
Offering limited, meaningful choices gives children:
-
A sense of control over their environment
-
Confidence in their decision-making skills
-
Opportunities to practise autonomy and responsibility
But here’s the catch: young children (especially under 5) can only process a small number of options at a time. Too many, and they freeze… or melt down.
The Magic Formula: Two Choices
A good rule of thumb?
👉 Offer two choices.
For example:
🥣 “Would you like to help make toast or yogurt today?”
👕 “Do you want the blue shirt or the yellow one?”
🧽 “Would you like to wipe the table or sweep the crumbs?”
Two options is enough to feel empowered, but not so many that they feel overwhelmed.
You’re still in control of the choices. They’re just choosing from within a boundary you’ve set. That’s the Montessori way.
What to Avoid (and Why It Matters)
Instead of:
❌ “What do you want to eat?”
Try:
✅ “Would you like toast or yogurt today?”
Instead of:
❌ “What do you want to wear?”
Try:
✅ “This dress or these leggings?”
Why? Because open-ended questions ask too much of little brains.
They don’t have the life experience (or cognitive development) yet to sift through dozens of possibilities.
When we reduce the choices, we reduce the stress.
